Hands has been working with short-term teams from the UK and other countries for the past 10 years. Throughout the year teams travel to Thailand for up to 4 weeks at a time to assist us with our work and to gain first-hand experience of life in northern Thailand. Each group spends time visiting and working at one or other of our project locations; working in local schools, rural village communities or at one of our long-term project sites. We also have specialist teams which focus on specific needs. These include physiotherapy, medical and dental assistance or advice, training in hairdressing, teaching English and even teaching knitting, crocheting and card design.
As part of a team experience you also get the opportunity to participate in an organised day trip which includes elephant riding, a beautiful trip down the Ping river on a traditional long tailed boat and a visit to one of Thailand’s hot springs. There are also opportunities for people to go on a range of cultural and adventure days. These include visits to a northern craft or flower market, a Khantoke dinner complete with traditional hill tribe dance and music or white water rafting and jungle trekking through the mountains of northern Thailand. The cross-cultural experience of being on a team is not only fun and interesting, it can also prove life-changing.
The additional funds that teams raise are often used in projects that directly benefit the communities they visit. Previous teams have funded the refurbishing of school buildings, equipping playgrounds and supported various micro-enterprise projects.
